Future Fit Tech: implementing technology to deliver tomorrow’s business outcomes!

This positions CIODAY2026 as the moment where digital leaders enhance the business models, design platforms, scale AI, revisit their cloud strategies and improve resilience. Technology needs to be embedded more than ever in organisations, instead of bolted on. Why Future Fit Tech for CIODAY2026

Digital and technology leaders are deploying technologies to stay competitive in unpredictable markets, improve resilience and address increasing regulatory requirements to protect the license to operate, and leverage emerging technology trends to improve the performance. Deploying technologies, including platforms, AI, cloud, cybersecurity require long‑term strategies and well a considered architecture, not just focussing on initiating isolated technology pilots.

The resilience and regulatory requirements challenges make things more difficult. Leadership need to set and monitor the risk appetite, which is different from value creation and ROI, and set strategies accordingly.  

CIODAY2026 defines what future‑fit means in practice for digital and technology leaders in their organisations, and for their governance models and leadership structures. Future Fit is not limited to the deployment of technology stacks. This theme explicitly links technology choices to value creation, compliance, organisational design and target operating model, and scalability across the entire organisation and ecosystems.

Four thematic tracks

1.      Platforms that last
Data sharing and transacting must be seamless and autonomous in ecosystems. Organisations are struggling to deploy platforms to facilitate this. In addition to trust, aligned standards and technology stacks as well as agreed governance and assurance are required. 

Data sharing and digital transacting must become increasingly seamless, secure, and autonomous within ecosystems. Organisations are under growing pressure to exchange data and services in real time with partners, suppliers, customers, regulators, and platforms across increasingly complex value chains. However, many organisations still struggle to deploy the platforms and operating models needed to support this at scale.

Technology alone is not enough. Successful ecosystem collaboration requires trust between organisations and its leaders, aligned standards for data exchange, interoperable technology stacks, and clear agreements on governance, accountability, and assurance. Without these foundations, organisations risk fragmentation, inconsistent data quality, security vulnerabilities, and operational inefficiencies.

The challenge is further complicated by evolving regulatory requirements, increasing cybersecurity concerns, and the need for transparency in how data is accessed, shared, and monetised. Organisations also need confidence that ecosystem participants comply with agreed rules, controls, and service levels.

As ecosystems become more digital and interconnected, platform capabilities will become critical enablers. Organisations that can establish trusted, governed, and scalable ecosystem platforms will be better positioned to innovate, collaborate, and create value across their networks.

2.      AI by design
Any functionality must be powered by AI, which requires a mind shift for technology architects and digital and technology leaders. Embedding responsible AI into adjusted processes and new business require enhanced technology strategies and governance.

Any business functionality increasingly needs to be powered, supported, and/or enhanced by AI. This represents a major shift for technology architects, digital leaders, and business decision-makers. AI is no longer a separate innovation initiative or experimental capability at the edge of the organisation. It is becoming a core component of products, services, operations, customer interactions, and decision-making processes in ecosystems.

This requires a significant mindset change. Technology architectures must evolve from traditional application-centric models towards AI-enabled platforms, data-driven ecosystems, and intelligent automation capabilities. Digital and technology leaders must rethink how applications are designed, how data is governed, and how business processes are structured to support embedded AI capabilities at scale.

At the same time, organisations cannot adopt AI without strong governance and clear accountability. Embedding responsible AI into business operations requires updated technology strategies, new governance frameworks, and redesigned operating models. Questions around transparency, explainability, compliance, human oversight, resilience, cybersecurity, bias mitigation, and data ownership must be addressed from the start.

AI also changes the relationship between business and technology teams. Cross-functional collaboration becomes critical to ensure AI initiatives align with organisational objectives, risk appetite, regulatory requirements, and customer expectations. Organisations that successfully combine AI innovation with responsible governance by implementing AI by design will be better positioned to create sustainable business value.

3.      Resilience & trust

Turn security into a foundation for cyber resilience and innovation rather than a bottleneck. Strengthen this further through operational resilience by embedding resilience requirements into technology strategies led by digital and technology leaders, while reinforcing ecosystem trust through strong governance, assurance, and executive leadership.

Cybersecurity should no longer be viewed primarily as a control mechanism that slows down innovation and/or creates operational friction. Instead, organisations need to position security as a strategic foundation for cyber resilience, operational continuity, trust, and sustainable technology innovation. In increasingly digital and interconnected environments, security capabilities must enable organisations to innovate confidently while managing evolving cyber threats, compliance and regulatory expectations, and ecosystem dependencies.

This requires a broader operational resilience mindset. Digital and technology leaders need to embed resilience requirements directly into technology strategies, architectures, platforms, and operating models from the outset. Resilience should not be treated as a separate compliance activity or technical add-on. It must be integrated into cloud strategies, AI adoption, data platforms, application modernisation, and ecosystem collaboration initiatives.

At the same time, organisations increasingly operate within interconnected ecosystems. This makes ecosystem trust critical. Strong governance, assurance frameworks, transparent accountability, and executive leadership are essential to ensure security, compliance, and operational resilience across the wider value chain.

Organisations that successfully integrate resilience, security and governance into their digital strategies will be better positioned to innovate faster, recover more effectively from disruptions, while maintaining stakeholder trust.

4.      Talent & leadership
To remain fit for the future, organisations need to invest in reskilling and upskilling their existing workforce, recognise that some employees may not be able to adapt to changing requirements, and have the courage to recruit new talent at scale. Managing this transition requires bold leadership, clear communication, and the ability to guide organisations through significant workforce and cultural change.

To remain fit for the future, organisations need to fundamentally rethink how they develop, manage, and transform their entire workforce. Rapid advances in AI, automation, cloud platforms, cybersecurity, and digital operating models are changing the capabilities required across technology as well as business functions. As a result, organisations must invest significantly in reskilling and upskilling existing employees to ensure they can adapt to evolving technologies, new ways of working, and changing business expectations.

However, workforce transformation is not only about training. Some employees may struggle to adapt to the pace or direction of change, despite support and development opportunities. Organisations therefore need to make difficult but necessary decisions around roles, capabilities, and organisational structures. At the same time, they must have the ambition and courage to recruit new talent at scale in technology areas such as AI, data, cybersecurity, cloud engineering, and digital product development, as well as in business functions.

Managing this transition requires strong and visible leadership. Leaders must communicate a clear vision, create a culture of continuous learning, and guide organisations through significant workforce and cultural change. Organisations that successfully combine talent development, strategic recruitment, and decisive leadership will be better positioned to remain competitive, resilient, and innovative in rapidly evolving markets.
